Chennai : Actor turned politician Vijaykanth, the president of DMDK, Sunday accused the Karunanidhi government in Tamil Nadu of indulging in “large scale corruption”.
“Corruption has doubled in the current regime from what it was earlier. Food, clothing, shelter, education and health for all should be the priority of the government,” Vijaykanth said at a gathering here to induct 2,000 people into his party.
Listing a five-point programme, which he would implement if he comes to power, Vijaykanth said his priority would be “to root out corruption and poverty in the country”.
Populist schemes were not needed, for good governance he said, adding that the government must give priority to growth-oriented schemes.
“Don’t give televisions, give jobs,” the popular actor said in an obvious criticism of the ruling DMK government’s scheme of distributing television sets.
However, Vijaykanth welcomed PMK leader and Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss’ proposal of starting a one-year rural service programme for medical students, under which they would serve in the rural areas for one year before getting their degrees.
Vijayakanth’s one-year-old party has one legislator in the Tamil Nadu assembly. It has a dozen municipal councillors here and is being seen as a party for the future.
Ruling out an alliance with the DMK, he said: “There is no change in the decision of not having truck with corrupt forces”. Vijaykanth also said there was no chance of an alliance with the Congress.
