Eight U.S. soldiers killed in Baghdad vehicle accidents

Baghdad : Eight American soldiers were killed and 13 others injured in two vehicle accidents in the Iraqi capital on Monday, the U.S. military said Tuesday.

Seven soldiers were killed and 11 others wounded in a vehicle accident in western Baghdad, the military said in a statement.

Two more suspects, captured earlier and being transported in the vehicle, were also killed in the incident, along with a third injured, the statement said.

It did not provide further details, but said the incident is under investigation.

Another soldier was killed and two more were injured when their vehicle overturned and caught fire in an area in east of Baghdad, the military said.

The two wounded were transported to a military medical facility for further treatment, it added.

The soldiers’ names are being withheld pending notification of next of kin, according to the statements.

The latest deaths bring the number of U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq to about 3,774 since the outbreak of the Iraqi war in 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
