Kabul : Several Taliban militants were killed and six others were arrested during operations in the southern provinces of Helmand and Kandahar, the military said Tuesday.
An unspecified number of rebels were killed after they threatened a force in Sangin district of Helmand province, said the statement released from the US base in Bagram, adding, “a small cache consisting of grenades and several AK-47s was found and destroyed in a safe place.”
According to the statement, no Afghan or coalition soldiers were killed or injured during the operation. There were no civilian casualties either.
Six Taliban militants were arrested by the Afghan security forces in southern Kandahar province, Agha Saqib, police chief of Kandahar told DPA.
“Anti-government pamphlets” were seized from the rebels, he added.
Clashes between Taliban-led rebels and Afghan government and coalition forces have intensified in the past several weeks.
More than 4,400 people – most of them insurgents -have been killed in the violence so far this year.
