“Your life is precious. Please give up the fast,” Karunanidhi appealed in a letter to the octogenarian Tamil National Movement leader.

Nedumaran has been on a fast-unto-death protest since Wednesday on the Nagapattinam coast after he and activists of several other Indian Tamil outfits sympathetic to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were prevented from crossing the Palk Straits to take food and medicines to Lankan Tamils in the restive north of the island nation.

Both India and Sri Lanka had denied permission to Nedumaran to visit the island.

Karunanidhi promised Nedumaran that he would “exert” his influence on the Indian government to ensure that the Lankan Tamils were treated fairly.
