Kolkata : The government withdrew from the Supreme Court its affidavit, in which it had expressed doubts about the existence of Hindu god Ram, so that its prospects in the event of a poll are not affected, veteran Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Jyoti Basu said here Friday.
“The UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government backtracked on the affidavit so as not to squander its chances in the event of a poll. It says something and then does the opposite thing. Nevertheless, we will discuss the issue at our next meeting,” Basu told reporters after emerging from a meeting at the CPI-M headquarters here.
The government Friday withdrew the controversial affidavit filed earlier this week in defence of the Sethusaudram Shipping Canal project after a scathing attack from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Asked about the CPI-M’s stand on the Indo-US nuclear deal in the light of party general secretary Prakash Karat’s statement that the Left would not allow the government to sign the 123 pact, Jyoti Basu said the matter will be discussed at the politburo meeting Sep 28-30 here.
“I cannot tell anything right now. The issue will have to be discussed at the politburo meeting. The Left parties have submitted a detailed note Friday, stating their objections to the nuclear deal. They are still studying the implications of the Hyde Act,” he said.
