Amritsar : Former cricketer and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Navjot Singh Sidhu Saturday burnt an effigy of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and demanded an apology from the government for filing an affidavit before the Supreme Court questioning the existence of Hindu god Ram.
Sidhu, Lok Sabha MP from the Sikh holy city of Amritsar, led over 100 supporters to the historic Hall gate for a protest demonstration and burnt the effigy.
“The government has hurt the religious sentiments of our Hindu brothers by questioning the existence of Shri Ram Chander ji,” Sidhu told the protestors.
The Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), the ‘mini parliament’ of Sikhs, also demanded that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government tender an unqualified apology over the controversy that it had created.
“The sentiments of millions of Hindus have been hurt by the government’s action. On the one hand people talk about Ram Rajya and on the other they question Lord Ram’s very existence,” SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar said here.
Makkar said that the holy book of Sikhs – Guru Granth Sahib – also contained references to Lord Ram and his existence could not be questioned.
