London : A British woman who married one of Osama bin Laden’s son was Wednesday reported to have applied for a divorce because the couple feared for their lives.

The Sun newspaper said 51-year-old Jane Felix-Browne, who met Omar bin Laden, 27, during a holiday in Egypt a year ago, feared that both would be murdered.

When the marriage was publicised earlier this year, Felix-Browne said she had “married the son, not the father”, and hoped that people would not judge her harshly.

But now she said she believes that Osama bin Laden’s powerful family in Saudi Arabia felt they had been “humiliated” by the marriage.

“People are opposed to my marriage because I am British. I wasn’t prepared to see the man I love die. It was a really, really good marriage, a strong marriage. But I cannot stand by and watch my beloved husband die before my very eyes.”

The bin Laden family were afraid of the political implications of a British woman being married to the son of Osama bin Laden, she said.

“They fear embarrassment and complications, not just in their own country but also in Britain and America,” said Felix-Browne, from Devon, southwest Britain.

Felix-Browne has been married five times before and has five grandchildren. Omar bin Laden already had a wife and a two-year-old child at the time of his marriage to Felix-Browne.
