Patna : Hundreds of lawyers in Bihar went on a daylong strike Friday to protest the attack on their colleagues in the Patna civil court premises a day ago, in which an undertrial prisoner was killed.
The strike was called by the Bihar State Bar Council.
The lawyers from Patna High Court, district courts and sub-divisional courts abstained from professional work as a mark of protest against the attack.
Three lawyers were injured and undertrial prisoner Harivansh Rai, accused of murdering three people, was killed in a bomb attack on the Patna civil court premises Thursday morning.
Bar council’s chairman Rajendra Prasad Singh has demanded security for the lawyers. He said the attack on the lawyers was a glaring example of the collapse of law and order in the state capital.
A group of armed criminals walked into the court premises and hurled bombs at the undertrial prisoner who died on the spot.
The attackers also fired shots before hurling bombs at Rai, an eyewitness said.
Hundreds of lawyers protested against the incident by shouting slogans against the district administration. They also boycotted the court for the rest of the day Thursday following an emergency meeting of the bar council.
The injured lawyers were admitted to the Patna Medical College Hospital for treatment, police said.
Bihar police chief Ashish Ranjan Sinha has asked the zonal inspector general (IG) and the IG (law and order) to submit a report on the incident. Departmental action may be taken against some police officials.
