New Delhi : Just when Delhi had almost given up on any more monsoon showers, heavy rain lashed parts of the city Friday evening bringing relief to the sweltering people. But it also brought the usual complaints of water-logged roads and resultant traffic snarls.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), several areas in east and south Delhi like Ashram, Nizamuddin, IP extension, Lodhi Road and Safdarjung experienced moderate to heavy rainfall.
Though IMD is yet to collect data from other places, it recorded 8.6 mm of rains in Safdarjung alone. Sharp showers started around 7 p.m.
Nizamuddin and Ashram areas experienced torrential rain.
“The visibility in Pandav Nagar and Nizamuddin was less than 20 meters. The roads were water-logged and traffic was almost at a standstill,” said Vinod, a commuter.
Swapna Bose, who was caught in a huge traffic snarl near Ashram, said: “The roads have submerged completely. There is a queue of almost two km near Ashram.”
The weatherman said the national capital would experience cloudy skies, scattered rains and thundershowers on Saturday.
On Friday, the capital recorded the maximum temperature of 37.3 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 27.5 degrees. Both were three degrees above normal and made it a rather sweltering day.
The monsoon had entered Delhi June 28.
