Soldier, militant die in Kashmir gunfight

Srinagar : A soldier and a militant were killed Friday in a fierce gunfight that erupted between the separatist guerrillas and security personnel in a jungle near south Kashmir’s Tral town.

A defence department spokesman here said troops of 50 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) surrounded a forest hideout of the militants near Tral, 50 km from here, early in the morning. The guerrillas immediately opened fire at the soldiers.

“The troops also retaliated and in the fierce exchange of fire, one junior commissioned officer (JCO) and a militant were killed,” spokesman Lt. Col. A.K. Mathur told IANS.

Police sources said two troopers were also wounded in the gunfight.

In a separate incident, a civilian was wounded in a gun battle between army troops and guerrillas late Thursday in north Kashmir’s Pattan town, 40 km from here, in Baramulla district.

The injured was identified as Azharul Haq, a resident of West Bengal. He was taken to a hospital.
