The incident took place when an explosively-formed penetrator (EFP) detonated near their patrol during combat operations in eastern Baghdad, a military statement said.

EFP, also known as explosively-formed projectile, is a shaped charge explosive designed to penetrate armor effectively. They were first developed during World War II.

U.S. officials have accused Iran of providing and training militia in Iraq with these deadly bombs, but Iran denied the accusation.

The latest death brings the number of U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq to about 3,798 since the outbreak of the Iraqi war in 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
