Irbil : Iran has shut five border checkpoints with Iraq against the backdrop of the detention of an Iranian national by the American forces in Iraq last Thursday.
Spokesman of the Kurdistan goverment Jamal Abdullah said in a statement Monday that the Iranian authorities closed the border exits earlier that day. “We will try to contact the Islamic Republic for reopening the gateways,” he added.
Iran has threatened to close the border exits unless the Americans free the Iranian, who was nabbed in the Iraqi town of Al-Sulaimaniah.
The Americans said the Iranian served as an officer in the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and was involved in arms trafficking.
