Baghdad : Iraqi Vice-President Tareq Al-Hashimi, opening a scheduled conference of Iraqi tribes here, urged them to support national law and order troops and encourage members of their tribes to join them.
He urged Iraqis to “realise the seriousness of the game to which they are drawn and grasp the fact that they are now fighting a proxy war in which they serve as instruments.”
He underlined the role that should be played by tribes in such a war in order to bring to an end the threats facing ordinary life in Iraq.
He said the country’s political process was at a standstill and the performance of the cabinet was way below standard but he noted that the quality of law and order in the country was “steadily improving.”
Turning to the issue of the Consensus Front, of which he is a member, he said it was not in a hurry to be part of the next cabinet and said the Front would be ready to join the Cabinet once the political reforms expected from the government were implemented.
Participants in the conference came up with a range of resolutions including the readiness of the various tribes to take part in the political process.
