Dhaka : Former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s elder son was formally indicted for corruption in a special court in the Bangladesh capital Dhaka on Wednesday, officials said.
Justice Ministry officials said Tarique Rahman, who was once billed as Zia’s successor, was charged with amassing huge wealth by using his influence as the prime minister’s son.
Rahman, 42, was appointed a senior joint secretary general in the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, the dominating partner in the Nationalist-Islamist coalition that stepped down from power in October last.
Zia, 63, handed over the reins at the height of political violence to an interim government to hold a credible general election in the volatile country.
Rahman’s wife Zubaida and his mother-in-law were also charged with corruption.
Rahman was detained in March for interrogation on charges of extortion, illegally awarding government contracts and taking bribes.
