New Delhi : A team of the National Commission for Women (NCW) Wednesday visited the 24-year-old doctor who was allegedly raped and seriously wounded at an ESIS hospital in west Delhi, even the police said her health was improving and they would record her statement on Thursday.
A three-member NCW team, under the chairmanship of Malini Bhattacharya, visited the victim at the privately run Balaji Healthcare Hospital in Pashcim Vihar area and directed police to file an action taken report within a week, said Abdus Salam, under secretary with the commission.
“The team also inquired about the incident from the hospital staff, police and victim’s family,” Salam told IANS.
Asked what action it was considering against the Employees’ State Insurance Scheme hospital where the crime took place on Sep 21, Salam said: “We will consider action only after the police report and our inquiry into the matter.”
Earlier in the day, police interrogated the doctors and other staff at the hospital at length, but said they would take action only after the victim’s statement. The police have failed to make any arrest so far.
“The victim’s health is improving and we are hopeful of recording her statement Thursday,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (southern Range) Rajesh Kumar.
“We have no other option but to wait till her statement is recorded. We have some leading clues and the accused, who could be a hospital employee, will be arrested soon,” Kumar added.
He said that police were still awaiting medical reports.
The resident doctor was found lying unconscious and badly injured in her hostel room at the hospital on Sep 21 when her sister went to check out on her. The doctor had earlier neither responded to her sister’s telephone calls nor turned up at their home.
Authorities of the state-run ESIS hospital told the police that the doctor – a general physician in their hospital, hailing from Punjab – was found unconscious and injured in her hostel room. She was admitted to the emergency ward of the same hospital and later transferred to the private hospital.
The police said a special team is probing the case.
“Doctors informed us that there were strangulation marks on her neck and injuries on her private parts. She was hurt badly and for better treatment she has been shifted to a private hospital,” a police official said.
