The security situation in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) was discussed at the meeting.

A peace jirga (tribal council) has been negotiating with local militants in South Waziristan in FATA to secure the release of over 200 paramilitary soldiers who were kidnapped in the area on Aug 30.

Tension between militants in Pakistan’s tribal areas and security forces heightened after militants in North Waziristan scrapped a peace agreement with the government in mid-July and attacks targeting the security forces became more frequent in the tribal areas. Till date more than 300 people have been left dead.
