Montreal, Sep 28 (IANS) Three Indian non-governmental organisations have been short-listed for the $1 million Alcan Prize for Sustainability 2007, for promoting and implementing sustainable development.
Alcan and International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF) Thursday announced the shortlist of candidates. Ten organisations were selected from a field of over 155 entries from 53 countries around the world.
The three Indian NGOs selected are: M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, Kagad Kach Patra Kashtakari Panchayatand Utthan Centre for Sustainable Development and Poverty Alleviation, an Alcan press release said.
Alcan is a leading global materials company. IBLF is an international NGO set up in 1990 by the Prince of Wales and a group of chief executives of international companies, in response to the emerging challenges of economic growth and change in the global economy.
“On behalf of Alcan, I would like to congratulate each of the 2007 shortlisted organisations. This is one of the most geographically diverse shortlists since the creation of the Alcan Prize for Sustainability in 2004,” said Dick Evans, President and CEO of Alcan.
“The diversity in this year’s group of finalists also extends to the outstanding work these organisations are doing around the world. They are a fine representation of what the Alcan Prize for Sustainability is all about,” he added.
Alcan instituted the prize to recognise outstanding contributions to the goal of economic, environmental, and social sustainability by NGOs around the world. To ensure credibility and objectivity, Alcan engaged IBLF to manage the prize.
