Vienna : EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana has ruled out meeting with Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili in the near future.
Solana told KUNA Tuesday, on the sidelines of his participation in the unofficial meeting of EU foreign ministers in Slovenia, that despite recent Iranian statements that indicate Iran’s refusal to continue negotiations with super power countries the EU has left the door open to resume these talks.
He hoped that Tehran would return to the negotiation table to reach a comprehensive settlement on all pending issues between Iran and the international community especially following the 1803 UN resolution to intensify sanctions on Iran for continuing its uranium enrichment activities.
Although the last meeting with Iranian officials dates back to January before resolution 1803 was issued, telephone calls with the Iranian officials have continued, Solana added.
Tehran has strongly condemned the new UNSC resolution 1803 against Iran which runs counter to IAEA rules and regulations.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali-Hosseini said “the resolution is a politically-motivated move which lacks legal basis and is totally unacceptable,” adding that the new resolution has ignored the fact that Iran has had extensive cooperation beyond its commitments and solved all remaining issues with the IAEA.
“The country would never give up its legitimate rights to benefit from peaceful nuclear technology within NPT,” Hosseini added.
