At the inauguration of a debate at General Assembly on the going on of the Millennium Development Goals MDGs, Ban expressed concern for the increase of food prices, which threatens to deepen hunger and malnutrition.

The diplomat talked about the progress of MDGs in comparison to 2000, specifically the annual survival of three million more kids, thanks to vaccination campaigns and the struggle against malaria.

Likewise, he recalled that two million more people are treated against HIV/AIDS and several millions more minors have access to primary education.

Despite that progress, the South Korean official expressed we have contributed with very little of what we can do and many countries are pretty delayed to achieve MDGs by 2015.

In the long term, he added, the progress towards development is seriously threatened by the effects of climatic change and other environmental problems, and nations delayed with poor financial and technological resources will undergo negative impacts.

To reach MDGs requires that we do more regarding genre equality and women rights promotion, Ban expressed.

To launch an agricultural revolution that speeds economy and fights hunger, and to adopt measures to install complete programs of feeding at schools are among the identified measures to boost economic progress of Africa.

This group also recommends important infrastructure investments, to elevate the productivity and to integrate Africa into the global economy.

The Secretary General expressed his hope that 2008 becomes the year that marks a change in the progress towards MDGs and affirmed that measures will be taken to improve the poorer impact of globalization in the poorest communities and towns.
