Mumbai : Dubai’s Jumeirah Golf Estates has roped in leading Indian golfer Jeev Milkha Singh as its brand ambassador for this year’s season, the company said Wednesday.
Singh will sport Jumeirah Golf Estates’ branding on his headwear and clothing, David Spencer, CEO of Leisurecorp that owns the golf estate, said in a statement.
Though he didn’t divulge the exact figure of sponsorship, he hinted that it runs into six figures.
Spencer said Singh was chosen “because he is an exceptional golfer and has an incredible following in India”.
He added: “Moreover, I had watched him at this year’s Dubai Desert Classic and I came to a conclusion then that it would make a great partnership.”
Jumeirah Golf Estates is the host for circa 2009 Dubai world Championship.
The first Indian golfer to qualify for the European Tour, Singh has 14 victories to his name and has bagging the numero uno position in Asia in 2006.
In this year’s Dubai Desert Classic, Singh tied for 19th position at five under and has qualified through the top 50 on the official World Golf Ranking.
The 36-year-old was bestowed the Padma Shri last year after he won the Volvo China Open and the season-ending Volvo Masters on the European Tour.
Singh, in the release, said that Dubai World Championship was a tourney that every golfer wants to qualify for. “And to be a part of it is certainly something to be proud of and I hope that the relationship will continue for a long time”.
From 2009, the European Tour will culminate at the $10 million prized Dubai World Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates. The tournament that will be hosted thence annually, will be open to players numbered from 1 to 60, on “The Race to Dubai” (formally called The European Tour Order of Merit.)
