Srinagar : The chief spokesperson of the Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit was arrested in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir Thursday, dealing a major blow to the guerrilla group.
“We have arrested Junaidul Islam, a top commander of the outfit who was the group’s chief spokesperson in Kashmir,” a police officer told IANS.
He said Baramulla police arrested Junaidul Islam during a raid in north Kashmir.
The arrest of the outfit spokesperson follows a string of successes the police has had against the outfit in the past three days.
Two top commanders of the group were gunned down by the security forces in Dudu village near Bijbehara in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district early this week, followed by the arrest of three leading members in Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district Wednesday.
The police claimed to have seized a huge quantity of arms and ammunition from the militants arrested in Handwara.
Last week the police had arrested another top commander of the outfit in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district and charged him with involvement in dozens of IED (Improvised Explosive Device) blasts.
