Agartala : A Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader was killed by unidentified men in Tripura, police said here Saturday.
A police spokesperson said Tapan Roy, 46, chairperson of the Kamalpur Nagar Panchayat, was killed late Friday when he was returning home at Kamalpur, 125 km north of the capital city Agartala.
“The assailants used sharp weapons to kill Roy,” said Anish Prasad, Dhalai district police chief.
“Several cut marks were found on his body. He was immediately shifted to Kamalpur district hospital where doctors declared him dead,” he added.
Two people were arrested on suspicion of being involved in the murder.
Ruling CPI-M called a 24-hour general strike in Dhalai district Saturday to protest the killing.
