NHRC on 4th April asked the BJP government in the state to furnish data on Muslim detainees against whom no legal proceedings have been initiated in any court even years after their arrest. The human rights body refused to believe the present data prepared by the Modi government in this connection, saying that the number of Muslims languishing in state jails shown by the government is far greater than one presented by the government. Relatives of the detainees had knocked at the NHRC door for justice.

According to the present data of the state government, there are 369 Muslim detainees in Ahmedabad jail, 162 in Surat, 83 in Rajkot, 83 in Baroda, 78 in Jamnagar, 59 in Mawabi, 40 in Bhaonagar, 39 in Nadyad and 30 in Bharauch.
