BHEL Bhopal Registers Record US $126.4 m Profit

Bhopal: India’s giant Pubic Sector Undertaking Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, (BHEL), Bhopal unit maintaining its trend of profitability has achieved a new bench mark in its annual turnover and profit before tax this year.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday on the company’s performance Executive Director R. K. Singh said BHEL Bhopal unit has registered highest turnover of Rs. 28.08 billion (about US $704.46 million) in the financial year 2007-08. This turnover has enabled BHEL Bhopal to register a growth of 24 per cent which is higher than the all India growth of the PSU. The turnover in the last financial year 2006-07 was of Rs. 22.86 billion (about US $530.8 million).

Singh informed that Profit before tax (PBT) this fiscal year was also a new time high of Rs. 5.04 billion (about US $126.44 million).

He said that the Bhopal unit has achieved many mile stones in the fields of engineering, technology up-gradation and modernization. It is for the first time that all the parameters are not only achieved but also surpassed original budgeted target, he pointed out. He said the Bhopal unit excelled in performance in turnover, value addition, profit before tax, cash collection and increased its export turnover. BHEL’s growth here has been above 20 per cent in all fields, be it export turnover, order inflow or capital expenditure, he added.

Replying to a question Singh said that export turnover has also increased from Rs.3.27 billion (about $82.03 million) in 2006-07 to Rs. 3.68 billion (about $92.32 million) in 2007-08. In reply to another question Singh enumerated the International Operations being carried out by BHEL Bhopal unit. They are: — Electrical Motors for 4 x 125 MW Kosti Sudan Thermal Power Project have been supplied besides Turbine auxiliaries e.g. CW System; — Supply of 25 MVAR Shunt Reactor & Control Panels for PGCIL Kabul Afghanistan project executed; — Received export orders for Generator Transformers, 6.6 KV Switchgear panels from M/s. ECCO, Libya & Shunt Reactors from M/s. PDC, Greece; — 2 Nos., 240 MVA Transformer worth Rs. 80 million each had been secured first time from Azerbaijan & — Received export order for 3 Nos. Electric Motor worth Rs. 9 million from M/s Electric Generating Company Sidhirganj, Bangladesh.

He informed that other countries where BHEL, Bhopal, which is the mother unit is exporting equipment / goods are: Indonesia, Dubai, Taiwan, Nepal, Libya etc.
Singh revealed that Korba power project has given an order to BHEL that it had provided to China six years back.

He revealed that M/s. HEG Mandideep, a leading Indian Graphite manufacturer, has awarded a commendation certificate to BHEL Bhopal for a continuous and mutually beneficial business relationship for the past more than 25 years. Similarly, M/s. ONGC Rajamundry has appreciated the excellent quality of services rendered by BHEL Bhopal in resolving the long standing problems of electronic modules supplied by M/s National Oil Well USA, BHEL efforts has resulted in resumption of full drilling operations at site.

Singh said that BHEL is committed to fulfill the ambitious power generation plan of the Govt. of India and for this many projects are under execution in the area of capacity augmentation and technology up-gradation. BHEL has already augmented its production capacity to 10,000 MW per annum and is further augmenting its production capacity to 15,000 MW per annum by December, 2009. For this purpose BHEL is investing Rs. 42 billion during the 11th Five Year Plan.

He said that the major orders received by BHEL Bhopal unit are as follows:

Ø Under the R&M business Bhopal unit has secured order for Rs. 410 Crores for supply of Balance Of Plant for Ukai, Gandhinagar, Obra, Bhatinda, Panipat & Patratu Thermal Projects. There is tremendous business potential in this area of operation.

Ø Hydro Group has booked order for 33 Machines worth Rs. 1320 Crores for supply of 1619 MW beside O&M spares for Dehar, Nagarguna, Kopilli, Khandong & Kadra HEPs.

Ø Order for 2 Nos, 400 MVA highest rating transformer worth Rs. 8.35 crores each have been received from Adani Power.

Ø Order for 400 KV Generator Transformer, 400 KV Auto Transformer and Dry Transformer worth Rs. 69 Crores for Kameng Hydro Power Project of NEEPCO.

Ø Order for 2 Largest Shunt Reactors 125 MVAr 400 KV rating for PGCIL, Dehgam and Khandwa.

Singh pointed out about the National / International awards won by the BHEL Bhopal unit which are as under:

Ø Two employees from Hydro Group, B.L. Dhruv & S.K. Soni, were awarded Prime Minister’s Shram Vir Award this year for their achievements during 2004-05.

Ø Ramkishor Tripathi of Feeders Group has been bestowed with Shram Shree Award – 2005. The award carries a cash award of Rs. 40,000/- and a Citation.

Ø Jitendra Singh of SCR Group has been bestowed with Vishwakarma National Award – 2006 with Cash award of Rs. 25,000/- and a Citation.

Ø Sachin Bharti of Fabrication Division has been awarded Young Technologist award for his contribution in the field of Welding, Research and Education.

He said that BHEL, Bhopal unit bagged CII’s “Commendations Certificate for Significant Achievement’ for its efforts towards Business Excellence.

Answering a question Singh said a major recruitment drive has been started by BHEL which has resulted in the induction of about 4,000 people in the past one year including about 1,000 people being appointed in its Bhopal unit.

He said that the fresh recruitment drive was initiated after the implementation of Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) in BHEL created shortage of employees in the past few years. BHEL plans to induct about 20,000 people by the end of the 11th Five-Year Plan, he added.
