Two NATO soldiers among 22 killed in Afghan violence

Kabul : Two soldiers of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) were among the 22 people killed in fresh violence in different parts of Afghanistan, officials here said on Monday.

A NATO spokesman said two British troopers were killed as their patrol hit a landmine blast in the southern Helmand province, where they are stationed as part of the peacekeeping operations of the multi-national force.

In a statement, spokesman Lt. Col. Simon Millar said the soldiers were airlifted to a NATO medical facility in the southern zone, where they succumbed to their injuries. Their families had been informed about their deaths, he added.

Meanwhile, an Afghan governor claimed that the US-led coalition and Afghan forces have killed 22 militants during an operation in eastern Afghanistan.

Governor of Afghanistan’s Nuristan province Tamim Nuristani Monday told journalists that the operation was conducted in Do Aaba district of the province on Sunday morning.

However, Taliban spokesman Yousaf Ahmadi rejected the claim and said the foreign troops had killed civilians in their air and ground offensive.
