New Delhi : The Uttar Pradesh government Monday moved the Supreme Court seeking its permission to build a social research institute and a memorial in the Ambedkar Park of Lucknow after the Allahabad High Court stopped the projects.
Counsel for the Uttar Pradesh government will apprise the bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan Tuesday about the government’s petition filed in the apex court registry challenging the high court order.
The state government launched construction of the Kanshi Ram Research Institute, named after the late Dalit leader who founded the state’s ruling Bahujan Samaj Party.
The government also wanted to build a memorial to Rama Bai, the late first wife of B.R. Ambedkar, a Dalit icon who is known as the father of the Indian constitution.
The government started the construction work in the Ambedkar Park after changing the land use category for 35 acres of the land in the park near the Lucknow airport.
But the Allahabad High Court Friday stopped the construction work in the park following a public interest litigation that challenged the government plan to construct buildings in the green belt.
