Jerusalem : Israeli Attorney General Menahem Mazuz hinted Tuesday in a statement that the prosecutors would indict former President Moshe Katsav over the most serious offenses he was charged of.
The statement was issued shortly after Katsav reneged on his plea bargain reached with the prosecutors when appearing in court in Jerusalem, a move Mazuz said was hard to understand.
“Before the signing of the plea bargain, our clear tendency was to indict Katsav for the most serious offenses he was suspected of, despite the difficulties this would entail,” Mazuz said, adding that now the plea bargain has been called off and the necessary decision will soon be made.
Under the terms of the plea agreement Katsav reached with Mazuzlast June after several women employees accused him of various sexual misconduct, Katsav resigned his post, confessed to sexual harassment, forcible indecent assault and harassing a witness, while the prosecutors in return withdraw the rape charge and agreed to a suspended sentence.
