United Nations : The UN refugee agency and Google made public on Tuesday a new on-line program of maps to monitor global human displacement.
This initiative by Google and the UNHCR (UN High Commissioner for Refugees) is backed by text, audio and video information and details about the work they have been carrying out and the challenges they have been facing.
In the first of three levels, internauts will be able to learn about camps for the displaced handled by the UNHCR in the Sudanese region of Darfur, Chad, Iraq and Colombia.
The second phase gives details about the lives of refugees, health care and education-related issues, as well as access to water, while a third phase offers a virtual tour of any given refugee camp chosen by the internaut.
This new tool will allow the agency and its members to construct a visual, geographic data base available for those interested in learning about the refugee crisis in today’s world, according to UNHCR spokespersons.
