Kabul : At least 23 Afghan civilians died, and 50 others were injured during US-led operations in Nuristan province, Rahmatullah Rashid, chief of that provinces administrative council, informed Monday.
Rashid told local radio the massacre by US and Afghan troops also targeted children and women, and took place Sunday in the towns of Kendal and Shok, in Doab district.
However, the Pentagon command affirmed it had no news about possible civilians affected during the operation, and the Defense Ministry denied the existence of fatal victims among the civilian population.
In a release issued in Kabul, the military entity admitted three Afghan soldiers and 20 rebels died, and another three soldiers were wounded.
According to the source, the attacks against the villages aimed at eliminating the presence of alleged rebels in that area.
