Medvedev spoke as he met with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who was on his first visit to Russia as head of the world body.

The incoming president also said there was no crisis in the U.N. operations.

We think all this talk of a crisis at the United Nations, of some sort of problems, they have no basis; on the contrary, the United Nations should do what it can to support and develop this universal space for coordinating (nations’) interests, he was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.

In interviews before his visit, Ban said he would also discuss the situation in Sudan, Afghanistan and Cyprus during his visit.

I will also seek the Russian Federation’s views on improving the effectiveness of the United Nations as we are facing a daunting array of challenges, he was quoted by the ITAR-Tass news agency as saying.

Ban planned to meet with outgoing President Vladimir Putin and other top officials during his visit.
