“The EU has supported the three-point plan unanimously adopted by Arab foreign ministers. As you are aware, the plan foresees the immediate election of a president, the formation of a national unity government and the subsequent drafting of a new electoral law,” Janez Lenarcic, Slovenian State Secretary for European Affairs, told the European Parliament here Wednesday during a debate on Lebanon.

“However, the Arab League plan currently appears to be the only initiative that could help to put an end to the political deadlock in the country,” said Lenarcic whose country holds the current EU presidency.

“We expect that the Arab League Secretary-General (Amr Moussa) will continue with mediation efforts to resolve the current situation, and the EU will continue to provide him with its full support,” he said.

Unfortunately, added the EU official, “the recent Arab League summit held in Damascus at the end of March did not bring the desired outcome as regards resolving the situation.”

On his part, Olli Rehn, EU Commissioner for Enlargement, said, “the present situation is very worrying. The deep political crisis continues and the election of the president was postponed for the 17th time since 2007.

“Indications that Hezbollah has replenished his military capacity are worrying in the light of the threats against Israel,” said Rehn, speaking in place of EU Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner who is on a visit to Central Asia.
