The Electoral Commission said 17.4 million people out of 37.8 million voted at the electoral colleges, representing 46 percent of the total participation.

With 90 percent of the votes counted GPN will get 152 of the 299 seats of the National Assembly and its rival, the United Democratic Party, will get 82 seats of 136 it had before.

The elections and electoral campaign were marked by the lack of a program to attract the attention of voters.

Despite the authorities fostered a group of initiatives the attendance was 14.6 percent under the one registered in 2004.

The GPN´s victory benefits the step of the South Korean President, who aspires to promote economic reforms, ambitious infrastructure projects and harden the policy against Democratic Korea.

Observers pointed out that the high number of undecided people favoured GNP and President Lee Myung-Bak, elected in December.

Most of the 245 seats will be granted by districts, while the 54 remaining will be distributed according with the system of proportional representation.
