Noida : Two Noida policemen were suspended Thursday on the charge of laxity in duty as the top brass of the Uttar Pradesh police swung into action after the two shooting incidents Tuesday night that left a woman dead and a retired army officer severely wounded.
Uttar Pradesh Director-General of Police (DGP) Vikram Singh visited the sites of the two crimes in Noida, the township bordering Delhi. He also held a marathon meeting with the local police officials, including the inspector-general of Meerut zone.
Virkam Singh told reporters that sub-inspector Amar Deep Singh, station house officer of the Sector 49 police station, and sub-inspector Parmal Singh, in charge of the police control room, were suspended from duty.
Police sources said Parmal Singh was held accountable for not responding to the calls made by Lieutenant General (retired) T.J.S. Gill when he was struggling for life after sustaining gunshot injuries.
Amar Deep Singh was found lacking in necessary knowledge of soft targets in the area falling under his jurisdiction.
Four unidentified men on two two-wheelers shot dead Sheeba Thomas, who had resigned from Virgin Airlines a fortnight ago. She was returning home in her Hyundai Accent car after attending a party when she was attacked at 11.20 p.m. Tuesday in an area under Sector 20 police station.
Three unidentified criminals on a motorcycle shot at Gill at 11.30 p.m. near the Amity University crossing in Sector 44.
Angered over the rising crime graph in the township, a delegation of representatives of 25 organizations submitted a memorandum to Superintendent of City Police Rakesh Gautam, demanding action against concerned police officials.
Vipin Malhan, senior vice-president of the Noida Entrepreneurs Association, said the delegation included representatives from NEA, Bharat Vikas Parishad, Rotary Club, Nav Ratna, Sanatan Dharam Mandir and local MP Ashok Pradhan.
They said the people, especially working women, were feeling unsafe due to the sudden spurt in crime.
A delegation of the federation of Noida’s residents’ welfare associations (RWAs) also submitted a memorandum to senior police officials, demanding immediate arrest of the criminals.
