New Delhi : Arms dealer Suresh Nanda and his son Sanjeev, arrested for allegedly trying to bribe an income tax official, were Friday remanded in judicial custody while Income Tax officer Ashutosh Verma moved court for bail.
The Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) Special Court Judge I.K. Kochhar sent the deputy director of income tax, Ashutosh Verma, and the Nandas’ chartered accountant Bipin Shah to judicial custody till April 25.
The Nandas approached the Delhi High Court challenging the rejection of their bail plea by a sessions court.
Justice G.S. Sistani Friday issued notice to the CBI to file its reply by April 21 and posted the matter for April 23, when the bail plea of the Nandas’ will be heard.
According to the CBI, Verma, a 1999-batch IRS officer, received a huge bribe for evasion of income tax on the part of Nanda and also purchased a ‘benami’ property in Goa.
The four allegedly gathered in a Mumbai hotel to negotiate the bribe amount to be paid to Verma. CBI sources said that Verma, an Indian Revenue Service officer of 1999 batch, struck a deal for Rs.100 million.
Sanjeev, who is also accused of mowing down six people in the capital in 1999 with his BMW car, is lodged in the Tihar Jail for the second time.
