Srinagar : Funeral prayers were offered by the moderate Hurriyat group, led by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, for the 940 unidentified people whose graves were discovered last month in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Hundreds gathered to offer the ‘Gaibana Nimaz-e-Jinazah’ (funeral prayers in absentia) at the Jamia mosque in the old city area of Srinagar.
“Time has come when those responsible for the murder of these unidentified Kashmiris must be identified and punished,” the Mirwaiz told the congregation.
The discovery of the mass graves near the north Kashmir border town of Uri last month had evoked strong public outcry.
The Amnesty International has also demanded a probe into the shocking incident.
The graves were discovered by the association of parents of disappeared persons (APDP) that has been looking for those who disappeared under mysterious circumstances during the last 19 years of violence.
The APDP has asked the government to set up an independent commission to look into the disappearances of their kin.
