New York : The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), an independent group that safeguards press freedom worldwide, today welcomed the new Pakistani government’s move to lift restrictions on media imposed by the previous government.
A statement issued by CPJ, which is based in New York, lauded the parliamentary bill introduced by Information Minister Sherry Rehman that would repeal amendments made to the media laws last November.
“We applaud this bill and hope to see it passed swiftly into law,” CPJ Executive Director Joel Simon said. “We welcome these positive statements by the Pakistani government and urge it to sustain its efforts to improve conditions for the media.”
Meanwhile, the US print and electronic media gave wide coverage to the the introduction of the bill.
