Data is collected by National University of Educational Planning and Administration (NUEPA) annually from all elementary schools through the District Information System (DISE). This covers all districts in the country and includes information on enrolment of children in the 6-14 years age group, disaggregated by gender and social categories.

DISE data for 2006-07 has revealed total enrolment of 17,93,42,817 children at elementary level, of which 8,54,97,566 (47.7%) are girls, 3,56,42,553 (19.9%) are SC, 1,91,70,368 (10.7%) are ST, 7,51,92,721 (41.9%) are OBC and 1,59,50,533 (8.9%) are Muslim children.

Since Muslims share in Indian population is 14% therefore it shows that still there are a large group of children who are outside the school system. Sachar committee had reported that 25% of Muslim children in the 6-14 years age group never attend school or drop out.

DISE have earlier reported that 7.5% of students at the upper primary level are Muslims.
