Hamburg : Luca Toni was once again the hero for Bayern Munich, scoring twice as the Bundesliga leaders came from behind to be beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-1 and take one step closer to the league title.
The win sees Bayern move on to 60 points, 10 clear of second-placed Werder Bremen – who beat Hansa Rostock 2-1 Tuesday – with just five games remaining.
Bayern dominated the early possession in the Commerz Arena in Frankfurt Wednesday but fell behind against the run of play on 29 minutes when Benjamin Koehler headed home a Patrick Ochs cross at the far post.
Frankfurt nearly made it 2-0 in the 59th minute but Bayern goalkeeper Michael Rensing somehow managed to deflect Martin Fenin’s shot onto the crossbar and away to safety.
Within a minute Bayern were level, however, as Daniel van Buyten headed in a Bastian Scwheinsteiger although Frankfurt protested vehemently, feeling Aaron Galindo had been pushed beforehand.
Fenin had the ball in the net for Frankfurt five minutes later but his effort was rightly adjudged offside.
Then with 16 minutes remaining, Toni put Bayern in front with a tap-in from six metres and on 85 minutes the Italy striker slotted home his second goal of the night and sixth in three games to make it 3-1 and secure all three points for Bayern.
Defending champions VfB Stuttgart moved up one place to fifth, level on 48 points with fourth-placed SV Hamburg, thanks to a 3-0 win at home to Nuremberg.
Cacau put Stuttgart ahead after just three minutes while further goals for Antonio da Silva (13) and Fernando Meira (31) meant that the match was over as a contest well before half time.
Bayer Leverkusen slipped one place to sixth after going down 1-0 to relegation-threatened Arminia Bielefeld.
Andre Mijatovic scored the all-important goal and missed a penalty for Bielefeld, who move out of the relegation zone thanks to the win.
In other matches Wednesday, Karlsruhe deepened MSV Duisburg’s relegation worries with a 1-0 win while Borussia Dortmund went down 3-1 to Hanover.
On Tuesday, Schalke 04 beat Energie Cottbus 5-0 thanks to four goals from Kevin Kuranyi to move up to third, now 12 points behind Bayern, and ease the sense of crisis surrounding the club following the weekend sacking of coach Mirko Slomka.
Hamburg lost further ground after a 0-0 draw at Hertha Berlin while in Tuesday’s other game, Bochum enjoyed a 1-0 win at Wolfsburg.
