“Motorcyclists top the list of motorists involved in road accidents,” the head of the Central Java Provincial Traffic and Highway Transportation Office, Siswolaksono, said on Wednesday.

He said most of the fatalities were aged between 13 and 20 years.

Young motorcyclists often tended to violate traffic rules on highway and most of them were unable to control their emotions, he said.

He said his office would cooperate with a number of relevant agencies including the traffic police and insurance company Jasa Raharja to give people an awareness about proper and safe driving.

In 2006, 4,249 people were killed in road accidents in the province.
