17 killed in road accident in Bangladesh

Dhaka : At least 17 people were killed and 50 others injured when a bus overturned in Bangladesh’s Tangail district, about 80 km northwest of capital Dhaka, early Saturday, police said.

The accident occurred at about 6:45 a.m. local time as the driver who was drowsing lost control over his steering. The bus overturned and fell on rail tracks, injured passengers said. Sixteen people died on the spot and one died on the way to hospital.

Survivors said the passengers were mostly day farm laborers. They were coming from poverty stricken northern Kurigram district for cutting paddy in Dhaka, and other adjacent districts.

The accident was the second in three days in the same district. On April 16, 17 people were killed and 21 injured when their bus crashed into a train.
