Indian national security adviser concludes visit to Sweden

Stockholm : Indian National Security adviser M. K. Narayanan concluded his three day visit to Sweden on Saturday. He was a special invitee to address a conference of the foreign ministers of the Nordic countries.

This was a rare occasion when someone from outside the region was invited. Swedish foreign minister Carl Bildt took the initiative to interact with a special dignitary from India .

Bildt has understood the emerging power of India and convinced his fellow colleagues to allow Narayanan to present his point of view on the international security issues.

Narayanan spoke about India ‘s role as a global actor and the cooperation which India had expected from Europe in the near future. He emphasized that India ‘s rise was not going to harm anyone in the global system. He also praised the peaceful diplomatic initiative of the Nordic countries.

During his stay, the Indian official also called on Bildt and talked about the bilateral relations between India and Sweden , particularly related to nuclear issues. He stressed on the need to have a strategic partnership between the two countries as both the countries had a mutual stake in peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Narayanan further elaborated the issue of nuclear energy at a speech at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs, which is regarded a well-known think-tank among the international scholars.

India’s ambassador to Sweden, Deepa Gopalan Wadhwa, also organised a meeting with the leaders of the Indian community, based in various Swedish cities. Narayanan promised to look into their genuine demands and problems.
