Ranchi : The marriage of a freedom fighter’s great granddaughter in Jharkhand had to be conducted with money borrowed from neighbours as they failed to get assistance from the government.
Prabha, great granddaughter of Tikait Umraon Singh – who fought in the revolt of 1857 – was married Sunday. The Tikait family in Kharanga village of Ranchi had applied to the Jharkhand Senani Board for Rs.25,000 assistance, but there was no response to their request.
The board was constituted in 2003 with a bank deposit of Rs.50 million to help families of freedom fighters with the interest earned on the capital amount.
“The marriage was held on Sunday, but we didn’t receive any help from the government,” said Rajkumar Singh, a member of the Tikait family.
The family had to finally seek help from villagers.
Tikait was the zamindar (chieftain) of 12 villages. He was hanged for his role in the revolt of 1857, considered the first war of independence.
