Tihar jail inmate commits suicide

New Delhi : A 25-year-old inmate was Tuesday found dead in his cell in India’s high security Tihar jail, a few days after he was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Authorities said he committed suicide.

Anup Kumar was found hanged from the ceiling fan of his ward in jail number 4. He was noticed by his fellow inmates around 4 a.m. and was admitted to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Kumar was lodged in jail in 2005 on murder charges and was awarded life imprisonment sentence April 11.

“Anup Kumar was under depression and attending Vipasana (meditation) classes. An enquiry has been ordered,” said a jail spokesperson.
