At least 391 people have been killed so far in clashes between these forces since late March, according to official sources, which have provided no details about fatalities among joint US-Iraqi troops.

Meanwhile, the US high command said the main cause of the fire in an oil pipeline on Friday was a mechanical flaw and not a bomb, as previously announced.

Violence has claimed more lives in other parts of Iraq in the last few hours. In Al Wayehat area, in northeastern Baquba, the capital of Diyala province, two Iraqi civilians and a member of the Iraqi army were killed in a bomb explosion as a military patrol passed by.

One of the patrol vehicles was destroyed, they added.
