Indian eves finish fourth in Olympic hockey qualifier

Kazan (Russia) : The Indian women’s hockey team ended their Olympic qualifying campaign on a disappointing note, losing 1-2 to the Netherlands Antilles via a golden goal in the bronze medal play-off match here Sunday.

By virtue of this win, the Netherlands Antilles came third, while India finished fourth in the six-nation tournament.

India looked the better team for most part of the match, but were subdued by the late awakening of Antilleans.

India’s poor run with penalty corners continued to haunt them as they converted only one of the six penalty corners in the entire match.

India went into the breather leading 1-0 when Rajwinder Kaur converted their third penalty corner in the 28th minute.

However, India gave away the lead just five minutes from the hooter when Ernestina Schreuder converted a penalty corner to level the scores.

The match went into extra time as regulation period failed to produce an outright winner.

However, it was not to be India’s day as two minutes into the extra time Marlies van der Stel sealed the match in Antilles favour scoring the golden goal through another penalty corner.

India had earlier gone down on identical score against the Antilles in a round robin match.
