Iran: 26% increase registered in run off elections – Interior Minister

Tehran : Iran Interior Minister Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi said on Saturday that some 26 percent increase in voter turnout was registered in the run off Majlis elections.

Speaking to local and foreign reporters, he said that the people played an active role both in th first phase as well as the run off elections nationwide.

Successful holding the eighth round of Majlis elections is regarded as a significant achievement of the ninth government, he said.

He lauded the role of dutiful officials as well as media persons in holding such important event.

Out of 286 seats in Majlis, conservatives occupied 69 percent, reformists registered 16.38 percent and 14.29 percent belonged to independent candidates, he said.

People aged between 18 and 33 years constituted about 40.71 percent of the voters, said the minister.

He hoped that cooperation between Majlis and government would help resolve the country’s problems.
