“Finance chief of the Hizbul Mujahideen group identified as Zahoor Ahmad was among the killed militants,” said a police officer here. The other slain militant was identified as Muhammad Yusuf who was active in Baramulla.

Following a tip off about the presence of the militants, security forces, including the Special Operations Group of the police and troops of 29 Rashtriya Rifles, surrounded a house in north Kashmir Palhalan village, 35 km from here, in north Kashmir Baramulla district Monday morning.

“When the security forces zeroed in on the house in which the militants were hiding, they came under heavy automatic gunfire triggering a shootout that ended around 1.20 p.m.,” said the officer.

Police said Zahoor Ahmad had escaped from the police custody in Srinagar in 2004.

The house in which the guerrillas were hiding was reportedly destroyed during the exchange of fire.
