Islamabad : A five-member U.S. congressional delegation led by congressman Adam Smith on Monday met with Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf at Aiwan-e-Sadr, the presidential house.
The two sides discussed recent political developments and Pakistan-U.S. relations, an official statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
Musharraf stressed the importance of maintaining a broad-based and long-term Pakistan-U.S. relationship, marked by multi-faceted cooperation in diverse fields including trade, investment, education and health.
He emphasized the importance of political stability for economic growth and social development as well as success in the efforts to fight terrorism and extremism.
The congressional delegation underlined bipartisan view in the U.S. about the importance of Pakistan-U.S. relations and support for a long-term relationship based on mutual interests of the two countries.
They appreciated Pakistan’s contribution to the fight against terrorism and expressed sympathy for the losses incurred in this endeavor, the statement said.
Musharraf emphasized the importance of a comprehensive counter-terrorism strategy containing political, socio-economic development, and security components.
