Italy defends UNIFIL troops stationed in Lebanon amid criticism by Israel

Rome : Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Masimo D’Alema has expressed Italy’s full support for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) stationed in Lebanon under the command of Italian Major General Claudio Graziano amid criticism by Israel of favouritism towards Lebanese guerrilla group Hezbollah.

D’Alema said in a statement Tuesday that the international forces are working there concurrently with United Nations resolution (1701) and in coordination with all Lebanese parties involved.

The statement noted that UNIFIL achieved its goal in bringing stability to the region and is currently working jointly with the Lebanese military.

On Monday night, senior Israeli sources told the Israeli newspaper Haaretz that the (UNIFIL) is intentionally concealing information about Hezbollah activities south of the Litani River to avoid conflict with the Shiite group.
