“His condition was very critical for the last four days,” a senior doctor of the hospital told IANS.

“He was in the intensive care unit of our hospital on life support systems. His condition was slowly deteriorating and he passed away a little after 1.30 p.m.,” he added.

Surjeet was admitted to the hospital July 26 for the second time in last three months.

The 93-year-old Surjeet, a former Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary, had been unwell for the last several months. He was earlier admitted to the hospital May 6 with fever and respiratory problems.

However, he braved multiple organ failure, convulsions, pneumonia and fluid in the lungs, liver and kidney dysfunction and myocardial infarction.

Later on, he also developed septicaemia. After extensive treatment, he slowly improved and was taken off the ventilator. With further improvement, he was discharged from the hospital in a satisfactory condition June 3.

Doctors said Surjeet had been a patient of Metro Hospital for nearly seven years and had “undergone surgery for kidney cancer about three years back”.

The Communist leader had been almost confined to his Teen Murti Lane residence here for over a year because of ill health.
